I am considering buying a $270ca car kit and having it shipped from the U.S. to me in Canada. What should I expect to pay for duty.
thank you
Hi
My understanding is that if the Kit is manufactured in any of the NAFTA countries,(Canada, USA or Mexico) you will only be expected to pay Canadas GST (5% of the purchase and shipping price combined). If the product is manufactured outside of the NAFTA countries, you should expect to pay 5% GST + Import Duty which I believe is 17%. On top of all of this is a Brokerage Fee. This really depends on the shipping company you use. I recently bought a TX / RX unit off Ebay which I got for $50. By the time UPS and its brokers had finished with it, It cost me a touch short of $80 !!
I buy lots of stuff from the US. Last year I bought 3 Saddles from the states. By sheer luck they were all shipped using different carriers. Sabble 1 was shipped FedEx and came in with a $86.00 bill. Saddle 2 came UPS with a $102.00 bill. Saddle 3 came USPS and cost $7.60. All saddles were about $500.
My experience has been that if you can get the seller to sent your package USPS you have a better chance of paying much less duty.
