That one too. The 3 laptops I would trust. Besides that I might get a dell but only if I was getting it for a huge discount.

I think a gateway would be one of the last computer brands I would buy from.

Acer is supposed to be of high quality.

I haven't heard too much of them lately but as long as I've known of them their stuff has always lasted forever and ever. They also made my sweet monitor.

Well I have one of their desktops and it's great.

Don't go Gateway. It'll crap out once warranty is up, and they will sit and laugh at you when it does.

I would go in this order
1. Macbook
2. Toshiba
3. Sony Vaio

Agreed, if I had the money, Macbook (or any Apple laptop) would be top of the list. They are very reliable, and when something does go wrong, they fix it easy peazy.

Exactly
even though macs are expensive, they are WELL worth the money

you could also try to find a macbook on craigslist or something for much cheaper

About the earlier acer thing, acer isnt really that high quality IMO, they just make the budget mans computers.

i dont see why you guys are ruling out gateway, i here the p7811fx(coming out august 14th) is suppose to be the best laptop available for under 1600.

That's exactly what happened to my bros gateway when he was in college.

Just because a computer looks great on paper doesn't mean it's good. If you compare stuff that way then an Apple laptop will look terrible compared to everything else. The only part that makes it good is Apple uses top-notch hardware for everything compared to someone else who puts in a great CPU but then puts a terrible mobo in along with cheap ram and a cheap screen that is going to break with some use.

I just got a Dell XPS M1330 and it's really nice. There are four other dell laptops and a desktop that have been/ are in my family and we haven't had any problems.

i love my macbook pro- so awesome

durable metal case kicks @$$ too
(refer to attached comic- not same a macbook pro, but same idea)

i've dropped this thing off of the top of a bunk bed with no damage
i fell asleep watching a movie, when i woke up it was lying open on the floor, turned on its side

i later found out that it survived because they have this cool motion sensor
(evidenced by this-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knOKowQCFTY) lol
when they drop more than a couple inches, it stops the hard drive, so that it won't be damaged by the fall

It might have great specs, but it'll be built with the cheapest components, and when they fail, you'll be left footing the bill to repair whatever went wrong (generally more than one thing at once) and Gateway will be right there for you (to offer replacements/repairs at quadruple the price it should cost).
To show you how little they value their customers, they have an 800 number for comps bought from Gateway directly that are under warranty, a different 800 number for those bought from Gateway out of warranty, and a totally different (not even an 800 number) for comps not bought DIRECTLY from them (as in, bought from Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, ect) where you will get someone who just learned English (if that), and could care less about your problems.

I am partial to Dell laptops. Last summer/fall I got an Inspiron 1520 for college with all the top-of-the-line components (I selected them) except I chose to go with only 2gb of ram compared to 3gb. This laptop has been awesome, and I'm using it right now with a dual-display setup, with a 21" LCD screen and the laptop's screen. So I have my email on the laptop display, and the internet browser on the 21".

My dad also got a Dell laptop through his work that has been serving him very well. And in a job from about 6-8 years ago they gave him a laptop and never asked for it back when they laid him off. We still have that old Dell laptop, and aside from the old batteries it still runs great.
