So my XPS just arrived today and so far it kicks butt.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz
4 gb shared ram
320 gb 5400 rpm hard drive
WUSXGA (1920x1400)
Microsoft Office Student
Webcam
Vista Home Premium
DVD R/W
So I'm happy to say the least. Dell had a pretty good deal on it. This screen is absolutely georgous. It has a higher resolution than my 22" hooked up to my desktop so there's some pretty hardcore detail as this is only a 15.4" book. Not for those with bad eyesight. Hopefully I can dual boot XP on this machine and install my current versions of SolidWorks. If not, I'll just buy (or maybe get at Berkeley for free) the newer version for Vista. Anyway, I'm stoked.

If I'm not mistaken, the XPS line of Dell computers is their gaming rigs, ain't it? Either way, nice lappy :D .

Aww, that must be a newer CPU. Last September I ordered my Dell laptop, custom built to my specifications. Back then the Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.20ghz was the fastest you could buy. I set mine up so that it should be able to handle Solidworks in the years to come, since I'm a mechanical/aerospace engineering double major.
But damn... 4gb of ram! Mine's only got 2gb. How about your graphics? The best available for me was Nvidia Geforce 8600M, which of course I got. And I opted for the 7200rpm 100gb hard drive - plenty of storage for me since this laptop is more of a secondary computer (I live at home and commute).

That sounds nice. I also just got my laptop last week for college. I went with the XPS M1330 for easier portability. I also plan to use solidworks and other CAD programs on it.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz - Vista HP - HD 1280x800 - 2mp webcam - 2gb ram - 160gb at 7200rpm - DVD R/W - 128mb NVIDIA 8400M - Bluetooth 2.0 (with bluetooth travel mouse) - 9 cell battery (4hrs 40 mins rocks)
I'm loving the flexibility of having a laptop and having my own computer.
Duh... I can't believe I forgot to mention the graphics card. :o It's an nVidia 8600M GT 256mb. It accesses the leftover memory, though. It's a 32 bit machine and thus can only utilize 3gb of memory.
Yeah, XPS is Dell's gaming line. I couldn't swing a Precision and the XPS will run SolidWorks great. At least at the level I'm going to be running SolidWorks at.

Nice lappy.
Can't it use like 3946mb of memory? Or is it just 3gb?
Under system specs it says it's using 3.5 gigs and nVidia says it has access to 1.5 so I guess there's some overlap there.
