man my mom just got a new lap top less than a year ago its a HP Pavillion DV6000. in late march and last night i was printing pics and all of a sudden programs start so run slow and stop responding ect...i get pissed off and all of a sudden it says disk read error and it shuts it down to protect it ect..and it reboots to a black screen that says "Disk Read Error press cntl+alt+delete to restart" so my mom gets pissed off (whats new..lol) and she calls HP and man i wouldnt expect this, they are sending out a brand new 130GB HD for free! and they dont want their old one back! they said the problem is from shutting it down incorrectly but we rarely shut it down un-correctly! its because we dont have the charger on all the time and it dies on us so it shuts it down incorrectly so we need to keep the charger on it! lol anywase thats pretty cool of them! they offered another year of coverage for $139 so were gettin that too!

So you paid $140 for the coverage and all you got was a $60 hard drive?

they are sending a replacement new hard drive since the existing one went out, they then offered another year of coverage for the whole pc for $139.00

I thought you said you never shut it down incorrectly...
But you said you let the battery run till it dies.
That means the HD will be spinning and reading/writing then suddenly no power to them. I'd think that's very bad for the HD. I know my laptop has an immediate power off feature, I've gott hold the power button for 5 seconds and it shuts everything off instantly as if I just pulled the battery out.
I'd make sure you have some alarms set for the battery and don't let it do that all the time to the new one...

technically yeah we were letting it shut down incorretly! the 1 year coverage was free with the purchase of the lap top.

Don't ever let them tell you something is hard to do yourself.
Circuit City told me they could install me a new HD (my old 60GB was fried) with a 120GB one (only one in stock at the store) for only $300. I asked how much the HD itself was and it was $99.....
So...$201 to pop a hard drive in and run a CD? I think not...

Yeah, if you have money to blow, or you just don't have the time or know-how, then it's okay.
But for the common man, it's easier than you can even imagine...
If I remember right, (I was on the phone, they'd called me when they diagnosed my HD as fried and gave me my options) I think I asked the guy if he was stupid when he told me the cost of them doing it for me...

A yea circuit city does tell you that installing hardware is hard and needs to be done by a professional but a hard drive is a different thing. I have taken PC repair and installing a new HD isnt as easy as plugging in and loading CD, you need to partition (witch requires know how not just a instruction manual). Also take a long while to reload windows after you have partitioned it. services is where we make all are money. HP has good customer service, the only selling point i have for them, otherwise all there PC's are over priced!!! O yea you just got had on that 1 year extended warranty do you really think your going to get any where close to $160 in services back from the? Never extend the man warranty.

well its not my pc its my moms she can spend her money on what she wants...yeah HP has okay customer service, dell is better though oh and they dont outsorce their customer service rep's! thats a big one for me! i hate trying to understand those people from india or wherever theyre from

Its always nice to have full coverage no matter who you are or what you do, its just nice to have that gut feeling that whatever breaks or whatever screws up will be replaced/fixed free.

Why do you need to partition a disk to just run windows? And if you're running a dual boot with Linux partitioning a disk is very easy, and there's many guides if you don't understand.
