My dad was just as stoked about it as I was if not more, so we threw down for two and it's probably going to be Christmas/part of my Christmas. Check it out, the Asus Eee.

That thing's weird. I'll have to look in to it when I have more time. Is it a fully functioning laptop or is it just like a big palm pilot?

It's a fully functioning laptop with a 900mhz Intel and 512MB of DDR2 667Mhz RAM. It comes with Linux, but has a DVD that coems with it with all the drivers for an XP installation.

dude im going to get one too. im tired of hauling about my broken Acer lappy, the dvd drive is broken, Vista won't recognize my battery, the keyboard won't work when i have the battery in, but it still works. so i wanted to get the EEE.

Not bad for the price at all. I heard they have like an 8gb flash hard drive too. If I used a laptop for anything other than music and internet I'd be getting one, but my Ds lite does it all.

Let us know how they run.

I will. I used to be big into homebrew dev for my DS before I sold it, but 66mhz with 4MB of RAM really isn't enough to surf today's internet. And then you have to deal with how to get your programs on there.

People are running The Gimp on it. Photoshop should load onto it just fine.

Anybody heard about the "wal-mart" version of the EEE made by their chinese compter company (I've forgotten the name). It's about the same size as the EEE, about $50 cheaper, 1.2ghz, 30gb hdd, and best of all a 7" touchscreen. Sounds like a better deal to me. But I really like the look of the white eee, and it's probably better made.

The Gimp

is free and is just like the full version of Photoshop. Why spend hundreds of dollars on the real thing when you can get open source for free?? Same with Sun's Open Office, free Office.

Actually yea people have gotten photoshop running on it. You can even install windows XP, or even the mac osx-leopard on it. Im seriously thinking of getting one and installing Xp on it.

Are all of the EEEs capable of Windows? I browsed around for a few minutes but some of the sites said it wasnt windows compatible.

You were looking on the wrong sites...it will boot off of almost any USB storage device, if not any.

Yes, but what's the point of running Windows on it? You can't really play and games on it. And the few that you can play can be played under Wine on Linux. Plus Linux is free along with all the software for it. Oh and there's no chance of you getting a virus or any spyware.

Yea i see the point of not installing windows xp and sticking to it's native customized xandros. But for me i would install leopard if i could, but i happen to have a copy of xp laying around here(yes it is a legal copy), and am curious to see for myself. But we shall see.

That was an ignorant remark.
It's actually 900MHZ, not 1.2GHZ and that's PLENTY of computing power for the Linux based operating system. it's built for web surfing and basic media tasks, it's not a high end gaming PC.
