I've been working the sound at my church for a bit over a year now and I've been wanting to automate a lot of sound and music with a computer. So last week I took an old computer I had and did a quick install of PCLinuxOS and put it up there. I found the cd drive didn't work too well (didn't like audio cd's for some reason) and of course there's no internet up there. So I ordered a wireless card and dvd drive off newegg. Also put in a sound card I had laying around. Installed the dvd drive and wireless card today. Got it all setup and started ripping some cd's (one for tomorrow and one for me to listen to). While that was happening I started searching for some sound software to do some editing and to manage the soft ware with. Found some excellent software for Linux.

First I found Amarok. It's a lot like Windows Media Player but with many more features and more for audio. Got the eq setup the way I wanted and played some music. It sounds much better than the old rack mount cd player that is up there.

Next I needed some music editing software. I had Audacity installed but wanted something that I could also easily rip cd and record sound with, then push it together and make it sound great. I found Ardour and JAMin. JAMin is for mastering the audio and Ardour is for recording and ripping. JAMin is made to go alongside Ardour, making a good combination.

Anyways I love open source. As if I was going to get the same kind of stuff from a big manufacturer I could have spent a least $2000 already. Let's me put the money into better hardware, like a new E-MU sound card.
