Okay. The story from the top i guess.
got MX6030 laptop doe x-mas  *insert jumping up and down here*
happy and what not, nice laptop for what i need. 1.4 ghz, 512MB ram.
okay.
got REAL slow all of the sudden, not the slow from too much stuff on it, it went from start-up in under a minute, to, push power button, get coffee, take restroom break, munch on something, watch tv, mow the lawn, go to school, yeah, you get it...
it took over an hour just to boot up, then it was still equivalently slow once windows was up so you couldn't do anything...
SO, i was told by the gateway tech help to pop in the restoration disc and wipe everything.
i did so, didn't have to much not backed up to miss.
worked fine afterwards, but gateway never mentioned the disc was the wrong one sent out and was missing the drivers for, video card (can no longer watch dvd's, can't read anything other than audio CDs even), SOUND, yes, all sound. WIRELESS. no internet, and a few other useful drivers.
i got back internet and sound, and used it like that for a while, but wanted to get back my DVD watching option i paid for...well, my parents but yeah.
so, i e-mailed gateway and started up a convo. OBVIOUSLY this was entirely my fault that they sent the wrong thing out and i didn't check it when i got it to be sure, so they just never told me...:rollin:silly me...
being out of warranty, they couldn't do much. I paid $20 for them to ship a little CD from Fort Worth, to Dallas, Texas. In case you don't know, that is no more than 20-30 miles. so, after paying $20 for my free CD, i popped it in and restored it to get my drivers back after backing everything up.
took me an hour just to get my comp to read the stupid disc...
restored computer.
loaded a few files on, and it crashed.
black screen, restore again.
all goes fine. reboots for final time and black screen telling me an important file from the system 32 folder is missing so windows can't start up. it tells me to reinstall this file...:(
so, i try it all over again, this time, during the process, it comes up with an error about not being able to find a certain file to install from the CD. it does it with two different files.
get black screen with SAME file missing again and no booting up windows.
i tell them, they tell me to download this app and run it to test my HD. i tell them i can't because it won't boot up windows and request another disc because this one is faulty. i'm sent the same message about downloading the app and testing my HD.
once i get the concept of EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT though, he tells me it's an MS/DOS based app and i can run it without windows booting up.
i tell him, i'm 15, your gonna have to explain.
he tells me to put it on an MS/DOS formatted CD and boot the comp to that to run it.
NOW, i have to wait on my dad to help me there.
:d

SOOOOOO
does anyone here feel like i've been bent over the table here?...:o
when my dad bought from them, he bought a $2000 desktop as well as my $1000 laptop.
you woulda though i'd get better support?...

i'm not the only one. i've read hundreds of stories of people losing their drivers after using the disc that came with the MX6030, when i asked about that, they insisted it wasn't a problem and that those drivers were purposely left off, i was supposed to back them up before restoring...
YEAH...
*smacks forehead*

anyone else had this prob with gateway?
what should i do?
find their office and knock heads till i get a new comp?! :devious:
very tempting...:ninja:

i imagine y'all probably have horror stories of terrible customer support and stuff like that. let's hear them
BUT, i'l like some advice myself here too...
and NO, buying a new computer is NOT an option.:( I don't have anywhere near enough money. i have $11 in my wallet, plus half a milk jar full of spare change in my room.:d
i gotta get my laptop back...i miss it so much...
why do you think i'm posting at 2:30 in the morning? my dad finally went to bed...
and i get on it when he's at work

oh, and funny, my dad got mad at ME because my laptop won't even boot up now...
then again, he always sees me as more of an annoyance in his life than an actual person.

if anyone actually reads all of that and comments on it.............wow. oh yeah, and thanks!
congrats on having no life ;)

Restore it with the CD it came with and then go on Gateways web site and see if you can download the specific drivers you need.

That CD you spent $20 for them to ship had the files they have for free on Gateways website... I have no advice but all I can tell you is that you got Gateway. Were you expecting a lot from it? For a thousand bucks next time go for a HP, Dell, or even Apple. You can get a computer that is 5 or 6 times better and more reliable for the same price.

That is no $1000 computer. I paid $750 for my Gateway (brand new, not on sale) and got 2gb ram and 160gb hard drive

1. drivers are always online. always.
2. i can't believe you paid $1000 for that computer
3. ask around before calling the manufacturer, they'll run you through the gauntlet to get answers that you could have gotten here.

nah, i spent a few months searching for all the drivers i needed.
No, they weren't the drivers on the website, the one to get my wireless back up was on there, the sound one from them didn't work, and they didn't have any of the others i needed. I searched high and low for the other drivers, for like i said, literally months...
Meh, like i said, my parents got it without me knowing. I didn't have a choice in what they got me, i woulda gone for a different manufacture in the first place, but i was OK with Gateway because i didn't know this would happen. They didn't pay $1000 for it, i was exaggerating because it all pisses me off.
I've asked around PLENTY before going to them. Done everything i can think of, last thing i wanted to do was pay them to fix their mistake...

tempting to quote myself...
but like i said, even that doesn't have the drivers i need...
and the audio one from there doesn't work for my laptop either, i've tried it before.

gah, never mind this, i thought people might actually take my side...or even possibly offer a solution.
guess i was horribly mistaken eh?

Quoted for effect.

Why do you come here to a forum that revolves around hobby level remote controlled cars to vent about something, just to down anyone who has offered you help? Many solutions have been offered to you, only to be shot down. No one took your side because the sequence of events that took place weren't very sensible considering your level of computer knowledge. Short of sending someone here your computer, there isn't much anyone can do for you here hardware wise.

Eventually someone will come along and tell me that the mentality of my post suggests that I think I know everything. I consider myself a smart individual, but I don't know about alot of things. I don't know the first thing upon how a rotary engine works, for example.

I am not trying to flame you, memphis, but your attitude is the pits and being hardheaded about things you don't know won't get you anywhere in life. Asking questions you don't want answered gets you no where good in life.

What drivers does that have that you don't need??? It has everything on there. Name just one and i'll admit I was wrong.

Anyway, as far as their support goes, what else can you expect from a big company? Your case sounds special, one in thousands that went wrong. Is gateway in the wrong? yes. should you have used their "restore" cd? no. A clean XP wipe, done with your own copy of XP and installing the drivers yourself is much better than taking their handy dandy cd full of spyware and one or two drivers and popping it in and expecting the computer to fix itself.

the CD/DVD drive...
thanks for trying though
yes, looking back, i woulda liked to have my own copy of windows and all the drivers for my laptop on my own disc. my mistake for not doing that earlier on.
soon as it's fixed, i'm doing just that, and for my next comp XP

gah...stampede dude again...
not gonna say much
i'm not trying to down most of them, i don't appreciate trying to make my situation comedic, but oh well.
what exactly was i not knowing that i was being hard-headed about again?...

at least i put the thread in the right place with appropriate title...
if you don't wanna read it, then i don't want you to, it's not like i'd be offended, lol.

i'm not trying to shoot anyone down, but if it's something that's either obvious and/or i've tried and it doesn't work, then why should i say it does?

Unless your computer is special, windows should recognize the cd/dvd drive. They're plug and play, I know all of the laptops i have owned and the desktops I have built have all had plug and play DVD/CD drives.
