My computer stopped working one day, so I reformatted it. However, after I finished, the sound stopped working, and I cannot connect to the internet. I'm at a lost as to what I should do. I went through all the troubleshoot pages, and that didn't fix it. I really want this computer going again, so I'd appreciate your help. Its a custom computer by the way.

make sure your drivers for the sound and the NIC (network interface card) are up to date.

How do I check if they are?

Reinstall your drivers for your sound card.

I don't have the software needed I don't think. Is there a place where I can get the stuff I need?

Your best bet would be the website of the manufacturer that made your computer (HP, Dell, etc). Since you seem to have some way to get on the internet, just download the up to date drivers, put them on a disc (should even be small enough for a floppy), pop it into your comp, and install them from there.

You should be able to lookup what network card and what sound card you have via the Computer Management icon in Administrative Tools under the Control Panel. Click Device Manager once the Computer Management window loads. The net card will be under Network Adapters, and the sound car will be under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. From there, you can right click and look at the properties of the cards. It may be as simple as just re-enabling the cards, though I don't know why they would disable themselves. If it says the card is enabled, then use the new drivers you downloaded by clicking Update Driver. Tell it not to connect to Windows Update, then when it gets to the next screen tell it to install from a specific location. Make sure it's set to check removable media (which is what your floppy/CD is), and it should go more or less automatically from there.

Good luck, let me know if you need more help.

here are the computer stats for anyone interested.
- Black Enlight mid-tower case with Antec 500W Power supply
- Intel D915PBBL motherboard (built-on LAN and audio
- 3.0GHZ Pentium 4 LGGA 630 Processor
- 2GB Kingston DDR2 533mhz memory
- (2x) Western Digital 80GB SATA hard drive
- ATi Radeon x300se 128MB PCI-express video card
- SONY DVD-RW drive
- 16x DVD-rom drive
- 3.5" floppy drive

So it's got an integrated sound card. Would that cause any problems?

EDIT: Just went to the Intel site, and downloaded the LAN software, and audio controller. Link: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=1677&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21

PS: Sorry for all the newb questions, I don't understand computers all that well.

Well, the internet is working, but the sound still isn't. I downloaded the driver install dealy, but after I installed it, it said it couldn't start. Some "Code 10" thing. Any advice? I went through the troubleshooting page, but nothing fixed it.

if its an integrated sound card, the proper audio driver is usually on the cd that came with the MB......if you have that it should auto load, and it should list an audio driver

Just go to intel's website, and you'll find all the drivers you need for your mobo.

I got the drivers from intel, but only the LAN one worked. I had to go to Realtek's site to get a working driver for the soundcard.

Everything works now, thanks everyone for the help!

That happens sometimes with the integrated cards...if the card thats integrated isn't made by the company that made the board (Realtek in your case, Conexant in mine), you end up having to go to a different website.
