Ha! I like the mention of the record industry being more focused on units shipped rather than units sold, explains it all.

They are actually shooting themselves in the foot trying to fight p2p music sharing systems, in fact, that tidbit you downloaded may be the first time you ever heard the band play, so kinda testing the waters before you go out and buy the full album. This reminds me with the post office complaining that people using email is hurting snail mail, when in fact, it's one of the driving forces causing an increase in the use of the postal system due to e-commerce, ie. you would likely not buy something from out of state if it wasn't for the web and local vendors typically have their inventory shipped via. freight carrier, not the U.S. Post office. I wouldn't normally buy an album from a band I've never heard their music before in that same context.

I agree completely, I won't go out on a limb and buy cds of bands that I've never heard because someone else loves them. It's cynical, but saves money, and if I like what I hear on PureVolume or Myspace, I'll buy the album.

I had a debate about downloading etc with a computer studies teacher. She tried to argue the fact that if *hypothetically* I downloaded Photoshop, that Adobe is loosing money!

How can Adobe be loosing money if

a) I would NEVER buy Photoshop retail for a few hundred dollars.., so im not even a potential customer
b)I have downloaded the content, as a opposed to stealing something physical from the shop...?

She couldn't answer me

It's like saying no you can't test drive the car, you just have to buy it. It could turn out to be an amazing car, but it could also turn out to be really bad and then you're stuck with it.

The RIAA is just going way too far, getting sue happy, and basically committing extortion. "We think you're file sharing, so just play xx amount of money and we'll make this little problem going away". You can fight the RIAA and win, and make some cash doing it too. Microsoft AND Apple have denounced DRM, and so has EMI records. I predict the RIAA is losing much popularity among many artists and will be going down soon.

I agree that how can i really know if i am going to love a band if ive never heard them before. I have found some of my fvorite bands through the internet and went out and bought the CD's/.

Sometimes I just don't feel bad about downloading music. I mean some of the bands I listen to aren't very popular. I've never seen a Bad Brains CD in my life, so what's so bad about downloading when they don't $%@$ing ($%@$ing) distribute it in the first place? But if it's something like a Beastie Boys album it's at Best Buy and I'll just buy it there.

I refuse to buy CD's for one song and DRM can suck me off...

A lot of people like having CDs of there favorite bands. I'd personally rather buy 'Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat' than get it for free through p2p.

The RIAA went to far with threatening legal action for music tabliture(I know it's a bit off topic but I mean come on)

My reaction exactly. Guitartabs.cc was a great site, and the RIAA shut it down.

Used to do that with AOL cd's, but then they realized that their company sucks and no one wants to use their crappy internet service so they stopped sending the free trial cds out.

every once in a while they'll have a stand in a store with a few hundred CD's. Always numbering exactly how many they put out...
so i take most of them to make them feel like there getting to good use...like lighters and Frisbees and microwaves, but *shhh*
don't tell them, it'd deflate their heads...

I buy cds because they generally sound better than downloaded music and alot of the music I listen to is very hard to find.

P.s. Has anyone else noticed that new Aol cds are shatter resistant... they just bend.

M3mph1s

yeah..i've noticed that with some of them too...very annoying
just fold it over, and when you bend it back, it should shatter...usually
if not, pop it in the microwave, watch it crackle, then leave it there to burn in hell like it deserves
