I think my computer is about to blow up.

I have the basic idea on how to get viruses off the computer because we run some adware program, but it is insanely nuts now because everytime I load up the computer now, I get about 4 or 5 pop ups. They are polls like "do you like george bush, yes or no." and "click here to watch jessica simpsons boobs pop out of her dress." sorry if that last one was a little upfront but this is whats going on and all I really visit are my R/C sites, my Ford sites and myspace. So if anyone could tell me how to get these damn things to go away...it is much appreciated.

btw, I run adware every time I am on the puter and I pick up about 40 different viruses and I have spybot and it picks up alot of junk too.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Update

the pop ups now happen everytime I start the computer, open internet explorer, close internet explorer, or press the start button on the toolbar.

Also, it deleted all the sites in that thing that you type the web address in.

You know how you can click the down arrow and it pops down...well...they're all gone now.

EDIT: oops, sorry, double post. I didn't even noticed I posted it because it shut down the internet.

If you've already been running AdAware and Spybot, and they pick up something new every time, then you've got something that your gonna need Norton to get rid of, and even then it could cause some irreparable registry damage. Just save what you need, reformat, and buy Norton Antivirus. It's expensive, but it's worth it.

Also, stop using IE and switch to Firefox. That will help a lot as well.

IE is good, Firefox too, its no your browser, but you don't have the proper protection, Norton is the best around, install that and delete everything else, I have Norton 2006, the mid-grade kind that protects every + has firewalls + has internet saftey figure, it can be found here: http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=is&pvid=nis2007

Thanks for the help!

We do have Norton anti-virus, but my dad pretty much is the only one that knows how to use it...hopefully it'll work!

penguin, we had this problem a few weeks back and dad wiped the computer and put xp on this computer instead of millenium...a few weeks back we had the same worm and reset the computer to one month back and it still has the virus.

Who knows, we may have to wipe it again... :(

Thanks again all, I'll try and find Norton on this computer. :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT NORTON! Norton is the worst antivirus EVER! It updates itself only monthly or MAYBE weekly, so you're never totally protected against new viruses, and even then, norton can't even quarantine and especially not delte almost all of them. When I had norton, when i got a virus, a little box would pop up when i scanned. It would say "norton has found a virus, blah blah blah" then say "could not quarantine file", and the button that said "Delete threat" was greyed out. Get NOD32. It's mch better.

How much does that cost?

Like Penguin said, The best thing to do is a total system format and install a fresh O/S. But if you are not familiar with this operation and dont want to risk messing up your computer then go the easy way and install a decent Antivirus program. DO NOT install Norton, it is overrated and picks up false positives in your computer anways...Plus it eats up performance bad.

If you want an antivirus try any of these....NOD32, Avast, Common Sense, Symantec, etc...to many to name but those are great ones. If you want to do a total system redo then ask us for help :)

If you have the time to do a reinstall, do it. My comp was so much better after I did a clean reinstall. It does take time and you'll have to reinstall your apps which takes more time. That is by far the best option, though. If you can't do that, though, visit http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22 and they'll help you through it. I got a virus exactly like you had and they helped me get rid of it. Before it was totally gone, though, my computer stopped booting and I ended up doing a clean reinstall.

Alright thanks all!

I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to a reinstall but un fortunatly it looks like I will have to. I don't really know how to do it, but my dad has done it so he'll probably know.

Thank you again!

Couple things...

First, Norton does indeed use a lot of resources, but only when it's scanning, and only if you have a fairly crappy machine to begin with.

Second, Norton is Symantec, so I'm not quite sure what your saying here...

I used Norton, and it somehow put a virus on my comptuer as I installed it on my computer, and it screwed up my ports on my old comp, and it would of cost just as much to fix it then to buy a new one.

Umm...bull. Norton did not install a virus to your computer. And there is no way that it could possibly crew up your computer to the point where you'd need to buy a new one. Ever here of re-imaging? All you would have had to do was wipe the old drive, and reinstall the OS.

NOD32 is free for 30 days, then it's $20.

The point is not whether norton "installed a virus installed a virus" or not, it's just that norton sucks.

This is a little piece of freeware I picked up a while ago, have not been able to find the author or original web site I got it from so uploaded it to my domain: http://discflight.com/HijackThis.exe

Just save it to your desktop or somewhere you can get at it. Turn off all browsers and let it scan. Anything that sais BHO, check it off to get rid of it, this may help, also take note as to anything else it shows up, you should only have a small handful of aps any time, ie. your virus protection, flash plug in, MS updates and a few others. This little program does wonders and is powerful, you may have to run it a few times back to back to get rid of everything.

Try Avast!
It's free. It works.

^^ I either reccoment AVG Free, Avast!, or NOD32 as far as cheap as free virus protection that works better than norton.

Have you used anything else? Norton eats up way too much system resources; the specs to run it are really quite high. IT gives false psitives, that can include actual spyware removal programs, or even benign folders that may just be acting strangs. Also, it does a VERY bad job at actually deleting a virus if it manages to even catch it in the first place. First, it has to place it in quarantine, but only if it's not read only (as most system files ARE NOT read only, so if you get a virus in your system 32 files ((most common)) then Norton will have a tough time even quarantining it), and if it actually DOES manage to quarantine it, it still lets Windows access it, so it could still spread. Then, if it manages to quarantine it WITHOUT spreading it even more, good luck getting it to delete it, which brings me to Norton's problems with definitions: It only updates them ONCE A MONTH. That means, that if you update your definitions at the end of December, and a virus comes out before your next update in January, then you're screwed. Basically, it sucks.
