Hi, my computer is startin to get super slow for what i do. So, i am starting to upgrade it. I just purchased a gig ram and i wanted to also get a new processor. I mainly do video editing, video converting, lots of ipod convertors so on.... So heres what computer i have...Its a compaq presario with a intel celeron d processor. Its pretty much a base model computer and its in need of new hardware. I have no clue what to get so i was wondering what would be the best choice for under $200. doesnt need to be super special, just faster then what i have now. could somebody help me out????

ok you'd only be able to get a better celeron D, but that's redundant because celeron's suck. MY advice? new computer that you'll be able to upgrade. You MIGHT be able to upgrade to a P4, but I doubt it since it's a mainstream comp. company.
$200... ok, gut the compaq harware slap in your own mobo and cpu re-use your other harware.
$99 cpu (intel dual core 2.66gHz) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116001
$83 mobo (for ddr2) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135201
or
$63 mobo (for ddr1) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121309

That won't work...his compaq has a PCI graphics card (or maybe onboard IDK), and if I remember correctly, all compaq cases are mini-ATX, and probably all of those mobos you mentioned are FullATX (I didn't look at them I don't know, but that's usually the case) and I can guarantee you that the power supply won't be enough to run a dual core and especially no the new graphics card he'll have to buy if he went with one of those mobo's.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116001 for the dual core, sorry, I'll fix my other post.
but the on board vid will be better than the PCI graphics he has now, and if you are running basic equipment not overclocking and no high end vid he can get by with a 350w PSU I dont care what anyone says you dont need 500w PSU in a system UNLESS you are running high end graphics, SLI/Crossfire, overclocking. if/when he upgrades video then he can look at getting a new PSU.
here is a nice little calculator -> http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp
as for the case, didnt think of that, the mobos I picked are mATX.
as for the case/psu area well.. if he doesnt want to reuse the compaq case. he can always save up some more cash (its hard I know, doing it now myself) if he doesnt want to reuse the compaq case.
antec sonata II $90 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129155
if you want to stay with the mATX size case
coolermaster Centurion Micro ATX $70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119089

How many watts is his current PSU? How many volts on the 12v rail? I'm pretty sure that Dual-core requires at least 20v on the 12v rail...

? 12v rail should be 12v.. but the amp draw is 13amp countious, 16amp peak (mobo 945 chipset) if you have the extreme edtion dual core (mobo 955 chipset) then you need dual 12v rails 8amp countious, 10amp peak.
so the questions in the air
1. whats the size of the case?
2. whats the PSU?

Sorry, I meant amps. I think that it would be good to be on the safe wide at 20amps on the 12v rail.
