How'z it been, min?
i wasn't asking where to get photoshop and illustrator help, i was offering it :p .
life is good. living with my fiance, going to tech school for software i already freaking know, doing some freelance graphic design, ect.
i'm still fat too. always a plus. viva la general tso and original recipe!
while i'm at it, indesign and quark too. i'm a bit rusty with quark though, barely touched it since indesign came out. and i can't promise i'll have a solution for major indesign problems either
Sounds niice. I was just telling people to DL some podcasts if they want to pick up some tips.

So, whenever I want to resize pictures I go to Jasc paint shop pro 8, open the picture, do resize picture, width around 500. It seems like when I do that I lose a lot of quality in the picture and it becomes more grainy. Is there a better way of doing this? Am I doing something wrong?

What size of picture is it and how many colors does it use? I use paint shop pro 7, but I have 8, 9, and X(10) and they are similar so my directions may not be exactly correct but should be easy to figure out.
I have found that if the picture does not contain many colors, and it is in 16 million color format, paint shop pro automatically adds colors not originally in the picture using an althagorithm to make most pictures look better. This problem is solved by doing the following:
1-Go to Colors>Count Colors Used.
2-Go to Colors>Decrease Color Depth>X Colors (4/8 bit) and type in the exact number that you got in step 1.
3-If you did it correctly there should be no changes to be noticed in the picture quality, size, or anything. The only difference will be the size of the picture in MB or MB, and the number of colors it uses.
If this gets you the quality you desire, DO NOT SAVE IT. Do the following:
1-File>Export>JPEG Optimizer
2-Leave the compression value to 1 at all times to maintain the picture quality. As long as this number is 1, your quality will not be reduced. All this will do is reduce the size in KB, and stop PSP from automatically adding colors to the palette by telling the image that it only needs to use the colors that are in the picture.
3-After you press ok, the save prompt will come up. It is now safe to save the picture.
If it doesn't work for you, let me know or post the picture, and I will see what I can do. Hope this helps!
i don't use paint shop pro (i had it installed at one point but never used it).
can it export a tiff file? if so, do that. if not, the next best thing would probably be a png.
is this for the web, or for print btw?
if it's for print, change your resolution to 300 (it's probably set at 72) and change the color mode to CMYK (it's probably set at RGB)
web = 72dpi, rgb jpeg
print = 300dpi cmyk tiff
