So, My dad got a new motherboard+ intel celeron D processer,2.53 ghz. And i took his old comp, amd athlon to make for a backup comp. I reformatted and installed everything and had the covers off. It ran great, then i went to bios and overclocked it. just changed 100 mhz clock speed to 133 mhz and didnt change the multiplyer.( if u know anything about OC youll know). Now, This changed the comp from a 1.22 ghz to 1.66 ghz( not a bad gain) I run the comp for 15 min and start putting on the covers, shoving the wires back in from the HD i just changed... then the comp locks?? i shut it down and put the covers on then tried starting it. It would start up, not even to bios, just had the power supply spinning but nothing coming up. I checked all connections and cant see a problem!! Did i fry the CPU? it wasnt that hot after i OC it, i checked it with my fingers, it felt normal? Help? oh well, it was being replaced by my dads new comp anyways... -Jon

Have you tried resetting the BIOS so that it will reset the clock speed back to 100? Usually there is a jumper that you switch for a second and then put back to reset the bios.

hrmm, i have the manual for the motherboard and it doesnt tell how to reset the bios... and i cant find the correct jumper!! also. i took the heatsink off and tried just starting it with my finger on top, and it goes from 0 to 800 degrees in abount 2 seconds.. so, the overclocking added alot of heat, but it wont start up? i mean, even without a chip, it should still go to the bios.... imma try it on my more expensive comp.. -Jon

just take the battery off of the motherboard, that's another way to clear the CMOS.

Sorry for the double post, but is it an old K6 or Duron? Those generate a lot of heat, but of couse it'll be hot w/ no heatsink...

The jumper your looking for is always located very close to the CMOS battery, just leave the mains power plugged in, move the jumper to cover the 3rd pin and the middle one, wait 15 secs and move it back. Failing this, you can reset most bios's by pressing the "Insert" button on the keyboard as you boot it.

Never, ever boot a system without a heatsink on the cpu. There's upto 100w of heat to disippate. Also when you try overclocking that far you hit other problems - sometimes you need to bump the cpu voltage up a bit, and changing the FSB also changes the memory speed, PCI bus speed, and I believe affects the AGP voltage. Any one of these components could cause a lock up when pushed beyond their limits, not just the CPU.

Maybe I mis-read what you put, but you shouldn't change power or IDE cables while the system is running either, this doesn't do stuff much good and may well be whats caused your bios to confuse itself.

1. Don't overclock if you don't even know what a CMOS jumper is.

2. Your CPU is probably toast, you shouldnt have started the PC without a heatsink, there's a 95% that that alone killed the cpu.

Exactly how long did you have the comp running w/o a heatsink? Very bad idea.
