I have a standard Pentium 4 1.8ghz Processor, which is slow, but I remember somebody mentioning overclocking it to 3.0ghz. How is this task performed? and what is required to "overclock" your system? Would there be much point in doing so with a bugged out, 3 year old system?

Thanks

I wouldnt bother to overclock it as cheap as chips are nowadays, and how unstable a overclocked system cam be.

a 1.2ghz overclock on a old buget system..... dont think so.

the most you could prolly get is a 4-500mhz over clock on air and be stable, might get higher with water cooling. but at that point just go buy a new chip and mobo for what you would spend on the water cooling stuff to get the overclock.

but if you really want to try it you might want to google up a forum for oveclockers and search around see what others have done and save you from killing your pc.

I wouldn't overclock on an old PC, and if it's a pre-built system usually the BIOS doesn't even have the option. As said above, save a bit for a new mobo/CPU combo, they can be had cheap on tigerdirect.com pretty often.

Depends on airflow, CPU heatsink, and of course, your BIOS. Go into your BIOS under advanced CMOS or BIOS i forget which and see if you can increase the multiplier.

what mobo do you have?

Ram and gfx card are always good ways of increasing performance. Thats alot of processor though, your pc is probobly just lacking in other parts.

You can't really do much to a celeron...No offense, but they suck pretty bad. Just get some more RAM.

Ive been overclocking my new pc. Its an athlon xp 3200+. Got it from ~2000mhz to about ~2200. Seems a little unstable, but havent messed with much yet. Idle temps are about 31*c with the overclock, and about 29* stock.

I have an AMD "Barton" 2500+, which they don't even make anymore, overclocked from 1800 to 2200mhz. I've had it higher, but I didn't like the temps. AMD's tend to be very stable when overclocked, even at slightly higher temperatures than Intels... In my experiences anyways...
