So I'll be heading off to college (Northeastern University, aw yeah) on September 1st with my desktop and my spiffy new IBM X41 laptop. Unfortunately, the school is stupid and I can only have one computer online in the dorm at once because

a.) I can't use a switch, hub, or router
b.) they run port sniffers to see what you're up to
c.) if I use anything that assigns an IP, I run the distinct risk of
i.) bringing down the network
ii.) getting my account terminated

My first thought, which was to use Windoze's Internet Conenction Sharing feature apparently won't work, since the serving computer basically becomes a DHCP server. That would mean that I'd start assigning IP's on a network that already has a DHCP server, thus screwing things up.

My new idea is to just utilize a crossover cable and share a connection through that. Seems as though it would work in both Linux and Windoze without any real problems, and since it should only reduce speed in communications between the computers or just to the laptop itself, I can still play cs with low ping on my desktop.

Really the best thing about this setup is that they haven't made a prohibition against it yet, so even if I get caught, it won't matter.

Any suggestions/ideas/comments?

have you tried running a cable splitter? the little thing that runs from your modem to your desktop, then a line that runs from your modem to your laptop??? i know what your trying to do, i did the same thing for my house. i justcant remember how i did it.

sorry to p*** in your kool-aid but with out a router your up a creek.

a crossover cable is just the same as a hub/switch, its just for two machines. to cross the two and still hook to the school you would need two NICs in your pc, one pc to lappy and the other pc to school. also each machine would have its on IP, first scan your busted. if you try and set the ip's the same only one will work (witch ever boots first) one will always see a conflicting IP.

if they auto assign IP's then your just as screwed, they see more IP's than there is supposed to be then your busted.

and I think they dont have rule against it, because they already have rule blocking the ways it can be done.

1. Buy two Ethernet cables
2. Cut them open and splice together.
3. ...
4. Profit!

yup, thats why I said "first scan your busted", just explaining how it would be set up if he wanted to try it.

If you do that, if it does work it (really doubt it will), there will be data loss, massive data loss. There are 4 pairs of wires in cat5 cable, they have to be in a specifc order on both ends of the cable in a straight line shot. That and they are very sensitive you cant just go splicing them together. Save your money don't splice the cable it will not work.

He is screwed with out a router.

And why would you really need both pc's online at once?

AIM on one machine while cs on other, transferring files between them over a connection, typing on one with notes on the other, etc.

I think XP's internet connection sharing will work.
