Well guys, this old 633 Mhz processor and 64 RAM just can't put out any longer. That's why I'm looking into getting a new computer. After going to HP, Compaq, Dell, etc. I figured that building one would be in my best interest. After all, I know what's in there, how to replace it, and most of all, I know that I put it together. Sooo, being really anxious like I always am, I decided to break down a list of what I would be getting for my computer. What is not listed: Monitor (parents are going to get that one I think, probably 17" LCD), Desk (Get straight A's and 100%'s in summer school and your parents may be nice too =) ), OS and Software (I can get XP Pro and Office Pro for $15 through University).

Here's the list in it's full context:

As you can see, that's one hell of a list. If you can see anything that I could cut and still have a nice system comparable to the one i have there, let me know. I'm pretty happy with what I set up though. Let me know what you think, and that case pwns!

That looks good. You might want to check out that power supply.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, but since it comes with it and I heard that it does alright compared to most crappy PS'es included with cases, I figured I'd try it. At the worst, I'd have to buy a new one, but if it works, then I save myself some cash. Kind of a gamble but I hope it will pay off.

Oh, in case you were wondering, Mike (rage-kid) was logged in, me being stupid, forgot to log him off!

Ya, you're right. If you can see how many amps it has on the different rails that would help.

why stick with the agp card? why not make the PCI-e jump?

will give you more room to grow in the next year or two with out having to buy a hole new board and ram.

about the same price. but you get a free gig of ram. you might also want to think of building a barebones computer.

The processor I selected has 400 Mhz more bus speed. I'll probably be switching over to a PCI-e board and a compatible card if I do indeed build one. (I'm just gettin' ideas here)

Get a different psu, really. If the PSU blows, there a VERY god chance your entire system will go with it. Its clear to me that you have money, so spend an extra 50$ and get a fortron or sparkle PSU. You can get a good case without a power supply for cheaper anyway..

O, and if it was me, I'd get a Venice core CPU, and a DFI lan party board. But I'm poor.

Lol, this is going to be put on hold for a while. Parents are being 'that way' again, they are going to make me buy a HP because they don't think I can do it lol. Real encouraging. Oh well they're going to buy me a monitor, either a 17'' LCD or a 21'' CRT (TigerDirect). Thanks for the help anyways!

I'd get the 21 incher, unless your particularly short on space.

yes! huge CRT's rule. Hey, just show your parents that you have (even if you haven't) a lot of "research" on building a computer. I found a really good online guide on www.computerforum.com It's in the "desktop computers" section and it's called "computer building 101". It's a great guide. Edit: http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=16363 There ya go.

Yeah, it's going to be ALL my money if I choose to build my own so I'm really backed into a corner on this one.

If you must get an HP, your bound to spend more money on it anyway as the HP's never have any video cards. Thus, your never gonna be able to play games. You will void your warranty also if you try and put a video card in or even just a simple network card.

Think about it.

I don't care about the warrenty. I'm only getting 90 days basic anyways, limited warrenties aren't really worth it. You have to understand it's not MY choice. It's my PARENTS choice... I don't have the money to get a decent mobo and processor anymore, plus I don't have anyone to help me out around here if I had any problems. Sure, I'd rather build my own, but my parents aren't going to let me (nazi-mode) and this way at least they pay for some of it.
