I was just wondering, is an AMD processor really more superior than an Intel when it comes to gaming? I've heard that a lot of people switch to AMD because they can get a cheaper motherboard with it and not sacrifice quality. Also if some one could provide a list of the AMD processors in order of slowest to fastests that would be great. I've been thinking of customizing a gaming computer off of tiger direct and have been planning to use an intel 3.0 Ghz processor, but I'd like to understand AMD a little better before I make my decision.

amd for gaming. the p4 was maxed at 4gigs with some super cooling system on it. an amd can run at 3gigs steadily for hours without overheating.

amd fosho theres not much to know just check what operating speed ea chip runs at... i run an amd xp 1800+ it runs 1.53 ghz... an amd xp3200+ runs 2.2 just get on amds website and check em out... Amd is much cheaper than intel I myself have never owned an intel so i can only speak from one side of the spectrum... but amd seems to be the choice of gamers...

AMD processors generally run cooler too, so you won't need a huge fan setup to run reliably.

how much do you want to spend? are you just getting a new chip and mobo, or a vid card to?

I ask because if you are getting a new card you should go PCI-e. and if your wallet is fat enough you can get a nf4 amd board and run sli (dual vid cards).

but based all on how much you want to drop.

oh, and currently some of the amd 64 chips run a touch cooler than the high end p4 lga chips. unless you are looking at dual core chips then heat is a real issue either way.

here is a review of a intel pent D 820 dual core. -> http://www.legitreviews.com/article.php?aid=210

I was looking into a mid ranged 128 vid card. For memory a 512 ram stick would be good enough.

Ok, I see many somewhat vague replies...time to make sense of it all.

AMD has a naming arrangement based on the "equivalency" to Intel processors. That is, an AMD 4000+ is fairly accurate in performance to a P4 4.0Ghz (if one existed!).

The current AMD athlon 64 processors run much cooler than equivalent P4 processors by as much as 30*C. You'll be looking at about 40*C full load temperature tops, even when poor case airflow is present.

The A64's are the fastest single core processors on the market at the mo' for anything bar video encoding.

You'll want a socket 939 platform, and avoid VIA chipset mainboards at all costs. Buy an nVidia NF4 for pci-express video cards, or the NF3 Ultra for good old AGP.

Also, you'll want 1Gb of memory for sure. Dont skimp on the brand either. Buy BRAND names for reliability, performance and lifetime warranty, such as OCZ, Corsair, Kingston and a couple more.

Video card.....for the latest budget card, look no further than a nVidia 6600GT or ATI X800XL

Thats about it.
