Well the top 5 distos right now are

1. ubuntu
2. mandriva (mandrakes new name)
3. mepis
4. fedora (free redhat based)
5. suse

I'm messing with fedora now for one of my file servers. you can see the various flavors and reviews at distrowatch.com

from what I have read Lycoris is the beginner friendly linux.

aside from picking the flavor, linux should be on a drive other than that of your windows install.
