think you will be happier in the long run, unless your a diehard intel guy

and if you realy want to go balls to the wall get one of these and the amd64 socket939 of your liking, but it wont be cheap

So, ur "upgrading" to a celly 'D' and some dodgy mainboard and vid card.

Money not well spent at all. Also, dont buy that A7v8X board either. Its better to spend to the maximum u can afford, as there will be the least amount of bottlenecks in ur system then, thus ensuring at least decent performance.

Option 1. Socket 'A' (462) Athlon XP 2500+ or higher (equivalent of 2.5ghz P4 and higher).
Asus A7N8X-X Mainboard OR Abit NF7-S OR Abit AN7 if you feel like learning how to oveclock to get something for nothing ;) (Nvidia Nforce2 best chipset for AthlonXP)

Option 2. Athlon 64 socket 754. Whole range of performance chips, from 2.8gig p4 equivalent to 3.7gig p4 equivalent. I personally just picked up a 3000+ A64 chip to do some overclocking as it was nice n cheap and o/c's well. Many have obtained around 4ghz p4 performance from them.
Mainboards for these 754 chips are prolific and cheap atm. Best to get one with an Nvidia nforce3 250GB chipset for stability+features.
Boards such as the Gigabyte K8NS, Abit NF8, DFI Lanparty UT NF3 250GB would be excellent choices. There are alternatives which are around the same price such based on the VIA K8T800pro chipset, and they are about the same performance. They are, however, less stable. These would be the Abit KV8 pro and others. I still reccommend teh NF3 250GB chipset.

Option 3. Pentium 4 socket 478. This supports northwood and prescott P4 cpus up to 3.4ghz atm. This was the predecessor to LGA (land grid array) socket 775. It cranks out about the same performance as LGA775 for less cost. The parts for both LGA 775 and socket 478 are dearer than an equivalent Athlon XP/ Athlon 64 system which do the same ammount of work. As for the Celeron, well its a joke to us pc hardware enthusiasts pretty much and is a waste of $$. Ur welcome to go with Intel on this path, but remember the dearer price and the lower gaming performance trailing the AMD Athlon cpus by a good few frame-per-second margin. If u do decide LGA or 478 is the way to go, then remember this...GET A MAINBOARD with INTEL 875p CHIPSET for socket 478, OR INTEL 915 or 925 chipsets for LGA775.

As far as system memory and graphics cards and the rest of the peripherals, graphics-wise, its best to get the maximum u can afford, as anything that seems a 'good deal' is usually bad- a'la the radeon9250 card u picked out. At least get something like an R9550XT and above or geforce 5700 and above.
Any storage option is good, especially SATA hdds nowadays being more convienient. The Abit and gigabyte boards I listed support SATA150+RAID.
Any case u want i suppose, just get one with a decent power supply. There must've been HEAPS of people Ive seen and fixed computers for that blew up parts because their power supply was crud. Simple pointer...get NAME brand one above 350watt rating. Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake and OCZ are THE brands to get for reliability and power.
And ddr400 memory. I recommend a known brand as they have good warranties (5 years and sometimes Lifetime warranty a'la Corsair memory) (I have some corsair stuff that has been overclocked for AGES on tight timings and overvolted, hasnt skipped a beat.

At last, my inflated to obesity post is done. Good huntin bro.

that grapics card is just ok. i would get the 9000 pro. if u have the money and if ur doing good gaming. also 2.8 ghz is pretty good but you can get better. try like 3. somthing you will see a difference. get about 1 gig of ram or 512. 40 gigs is good but 80 would be better and faster speed from the bus.

Jeez guys, I'm not mr. money bags over here. I don't do hardcore gaming or notin! What's wrong with that mobo? I had a radeon 9250, and it worked just fine.

So, ur "upgrading" to a celly 'D' and some dodgy mainboard and vid card.
No need to be rude... I'm sory I can't buy the best everything...I'm still running on Christmas money here! Thanks for the help though... ;)

why all the space?
Trust me,theres never enough space.....i got dual 200 gig's and am close to filling them up.

Thats why I posted the hardware that I did, still in the ballpark of what the mobo combo was but better brand, kinda figured you were on a budget by the hardware you picked

and yah, there is never enough space.

I run a 20g for the os and apps, 80g for games, 80g for mp3s, and an 80g for vid editting.

this doesnt even cound the compaq pent pro quad raid tower that I have that holds the stuff I want to keep but dont use every day.

its where i get my cases acrylic sucks it is not worth it as for the board sugestions go with the nvidia mobo save the money and spend it on the video unless you have a thing for intel

Soz If I came out rude at all. That wasnt my intention. Only intention was to educate people against making poor purchase decisions.

And NO, a radeon 9000 is NOT a nice gfx card. Man, dont post if you're not "in the know"as regards pc hardware.

I went ahead and went with the parts I posted up there...I've been using Intel chips in all of my compys...I guess I'm prejudice against AMD's. About the gfx card, the 9250 is good enough for me. I don't wanna spend upwards of 400 on one of their xwhatever series. As long as there is bullet holes and blood splatters on the walls, and the ground is not just multi-colored squares, it's fine with me. :)

Im afraid that may just be what u'll get with the parts you listed....blocky horrid gfx.

Why go with that bad celleron chip, especially wen a barton cored Athlon XP would beat it hands down.

If you play games at all, you don't use a cheap video card like the Radeon 9250. Unless those games are ones from like 2 years ago or older.

And yeah, at the price of a 2.8ghz Cel-D, you can get a better AMD AthlonXP (mobo and cpu).

OK I'll throw my two cents in.
I understand what your saying about a budget so here is what I do on most everthing I plan to buy.

First I make sure I have a good idea of what I want it to be able to do then look at the top of the line items and work down to where I have the most needed/wanted features at a price I can live with.

If you go at it like this you will have a good understanding of what is out there and you will end up with a good match for your needs and budget.

I myself plan on building a new PC this summer but only if I cant find what I want already made up.
One concern of mine is, I want to make sure all the components I put together all work well together with no bottlenecks.(<very important I feel)
So I will be doing alot of research before buying anything.

i'm guessing you run linux because of your avatatar, so the stuff you got is fine.

Are you going to do any mods or anything to the computer? Since its a clear case i would suggest some cold cathodes, led fans, and most of all organized wiring

penguinrusty
1.26.05, 8:28 am
Yes, I have 4 led fans, blue light-up IDE cables, blue LED cpu cooler and I bought lots of blue zip ties...But I didn't get that acrylic case, I went with a silver and bluew one with a clear window on the side.

How many times do I have to tell you guys!!!!!! I already had the 9250 in another compy, and even with a pentium 3 533mhz it had fine graphics!
