CD drive speed

Does CD drive speed effect the performance of a game? I have an 8x in my compy right now, and if I were to get a 52x drive, would that make a difference?

It really only affects the quality of DVD's and games. So yes, it can help improve performance of the game.

How? When a PC loads a game it takes the data from the hard-disk so the CD drive is not involved (unless you play a game that doesnt install onto the hard-disk). Quality is not an issue either, a CD drive will either read a peice of data or not, its not like a tape drive.
The only thing getting a new faster CD drive is gonna improve is the installation times of software when installing from a CD.

Your making it sound like I was offensive to you, sorry if it appeared that way but i wasnt trying to be.
erm........no, when your computer reads a DVD movie it probably reads it at about 4X anyway, if you watched it with a 52X drive (which dont exist to my knowledge) there would be no difference. This is because if it actually read it at 52X then the movie would be extremely short and you would have to be superman to be able to know whats going on.
Assuming no other hardware components are limiting your installation speeds (a very good assumption to make when his drive is 8X) then having a faster drive means the computer can get the data of the disk at a faster rate (more KB per second).

I in fact have a 48x24x48x dvdwrw+- drive and a 52x32x52x cdwrw+- drive, now it will only read dvd's at specific speeds. I have Nero drive speed also which allows me to select the speed at which I want it to operate. Simply put, the faster the read= better quality video. The same goes for disc played games and movies as it does for software. The faster the ability to read the more info that can go into the memory buffer and out comes a better quality image/video.

I would like to see the model number on that DVD burner, thought that the fastest one out was a 2.4x+rdl/16x +r/8x+rw write and 16 read and thats on a some of the newest high end burners...

but to answer the question at hand, yes a faster cd rom will help on transfer of data to the hard drive, witch in turn will speed up the load times on a game, install times, ect... but in game play shouldnt be affected do to the fact that everthing for the level should be in the swap space for the game, to get away from the games having to access the cd I would do full installs.

I never stated that the burn speed of my DVD drive was 48x24x48x, that's the playback side of it. The specs go like this: DVD+R DL 2.4x DVD+R 16x DVD+RW 4x DVD-R 8x DVD-RW 4x.

I had to correct the speed of it again since I just pulled the box out of the closet. It's a Sony DRU-710a DVD/CD ReWritable Drive.

No big, just confused me when you said it was a 48x24x48x dvdwrw+- drive , thats 48 write/ 24re-write/ 48 read. Thats why I asked, its all good.
