I have an old Gateway G6-400 or something like that with an intel board...PII 400mhz, and came with 64mb of memory, also an 8mb ATI Rage gfx card.
Well I installed a Netgear NIC card, upgraded to 384mb of memory, put in an old GF2 MX200 I got for free (works great) Put in a rear case fan so it actually has a fan. Sanded and painted the case black and added a 24x CD-RW (TDK)
It has a 10gig HDD and the old Winxp install went bad, tried to put 98 on it only to find my 98SE cd has some scratches on it and the install went bad. Tried to put XP back on it...guess what....that cd is scratched too. I was in the middle of download a NEW XP Pro Corp .iso when I found out my dad has WinXP HE....its a legitimate copy but installed on his new Shuttle XPC. Activation might be a PITA. At this point I was desperate cause the drive was royally screwed and kept getting a NTLDR error. Pop it in and go through the format in NTFS and install winxp home. Select complete activation within 30 days and from my computer did a little looking around and reading. After booting the gateway in safe mode...doing a bit in .cmd and running a couple .reg files the activation feature was disabled and XP Home cracked.
I setup some network settings, configured the built in firewall. Installed Zone Alarms until I get my hands on PC-Cillin or the New Norton SysWrks '04 (Cant find my '03 CD) and assigned it an IP on the network OTHER then 192.168.1.1 (For some reason my computers want my routers IP....go figure) so now I can use it as a file server (FTP) With only a 10gig HDD it wont get me far but Im getting a 200gig SATA for my computer when I upgrade to my new 64bit system and my current stuff (2600+ T/bred capable of 2.4ghz with better cooling and low latency OCing memory) will go in the gateway along with one of my current HDDs (my 80gig)
Im on a 3down 384up cable line and plan on hosting 6-8 person game servers, I play all the latest FPS games and a few RTS. So let me know if you want to play sometime and ill get it setup for a good WAN session.
