hard drive formating

My xbox recently broke and i took the hard drive out trying to gain a measly ten gigs. but i can't reformat it or write to it period. Is it possible to run a strong magnet over it and erase it manually?

That would erase it, but it wouldn't format it... so it probably wouldn't be useable.

I know it wouldn't formated it but it would delete the program that locks it down by microsoft the the gates gang.
