While in Worcester, Massachusetts for summer camp, one of the kids introduced me to Knoppix, a Linux-on-CD distro. I can't get over how cool Linux is. As we speak, I'm on Knoppix on my laptop while downloading Mandrake 10 to my desktop.

Anybody else here running Linux? It's so stable!

Yeah, I have used something like that but I think it was called Winux or something like that. I really liked it but I doubt that I would be able to have Linux as the main OS.

I'm planning to install Redhat 9.0 on my spare system here in the next couple weeks. Linux is awesome.

I've dabbled a little in Linux in the past, but never seriously. Hopefully, that will chnage soon, as I plan to use some of my spare parts to build a dedicated Linux box.

I'm not sure what distro I'll use... I have a few old ones laying around to pick from, but since I have dialup I can't really download anything new :( .

Mandrake 10 is awesome.

Isez2001, if you'd like, I could always download, burn, and ship to you the ISO's you need.

Dialup is evil  . The only distros i have is knoppix & knoppix-std. I had to fully install knoppix on my friends box, since it wouldnt stop crashing, not a complain since.

I've run Knoppix-STD, Debian, Mandrake, PHLAK, and Turbo Linux. In the unlikely event that a program crashes, the system does not crash and need to be rebooted like in Windows...just shut down the program and re-open it. The lack of drivers is annoying and installing programs is somewhat painful compared to Windows. If you use dial-up, you will need a hardware modem. There are a few Winmodems that work but you should stay away from them. With WineX (or is it just Wine?...) you can run Windows applications. Debian is my favorite distro...Mandrake is sort of the Windows of the Linux distro's in terms of easy installation and ease of use. Knoppix-STD and PHLAK on a laptop with an Orinoco wireless card makes a good war driving machine. It is simple to dual boot between Windows and Linux to have the best of both worlds...now if only Apple would port OS X for PC hardware...

Yup, installing programs and drivers have been the only probems I've encountered. :)

Marcus, you ROCK!

I got the discs today. I probably won't get it installed for a little while, as I'm busy these days, and I've yet to build the computer.

I'm looking to dive into linux after being a hardcore windows person since 98 SE... I had a box already completely built with more than enough stuff for linux. Only problem is it has an AMD processer and I can't find any stable distributions supporting it. Any help would be appreciated...

Edit: I did succesfully run Knoppix 3.1 over the windows OS but that just runs completely off the CD. I plan to Fdisk it before I install Linux.

Edit: After doing more research, mandrake has a 10.0 distribution for AMD 64, but it costs $130something... My processer is an AMD K6-2 500 MHz... Would I need to have the AMD 64 or would the i586 distribution (free) work? It list my processer as known as working but doesnt say for which distrubution... All my other hardware checksout.

Edit again: Goin for broke, downloading the iso's for i586... If it doesnt work I'll dig out another MB and processer before paying $130some.

Anything with Intel X86 compatible architecture should work with Mandrake.

Typically, anything that's i386 etc compatible will work with Linux. There are tweaks for paricular processors that could yield additional speed and/or stability. You're usually fine without them though.

BTW, my primary machine is a Powerbook running OS X which is basically FreeBSD with a pretty interface. :) FreeBSD is my OS of choice and what I work with primarily at the office. We also have plenty of Red Hat boxen and Windows machines of course. I have a FreeBSD server at home that serves for file storage and development.

After MUCH experience with several OS's, I have found that OS X fits my needs best and is what I enjoy using the most.. FreeBSD is a great work horse and extremely flexible. Windows is good for use at the office as a workstation since many of our customers use Windows - though my Powerbook comes in handy sometimes at the office too. :)

In terms of stability, the reality is that ANY OS/machine can be made unstable by improper administration. I've seen customers kill a FreeBSD or Red Hat machine within hours of getting their hands on them...as well as Windows. I've also seen Windows machines with months of uptime and FreeBSD machines with years of uptime (yep...years). It's all relative.

This is my first post in a while on URC... The reason? I've been drawn into the GNU/Linux crowd (my new obsession). Been coding quite a lot, too. Just thought I'd check in with the ol' URC forums - and hey! This is awsome.:D

I'm running Debian testing ("Sarge").

Wine ( http://www.winehq.org ) is a program which catches Windoze system calls and replaces them with Linux ones, allowing many Windoze programs to run under Linux. WineX is one of the commercial versions of Wine which has certain extensions to make it compatible with a wider variety of Windoze software (note that Wine is not yet at version 1.0, and is thus not nearly complete).
