Best video editing software?

Whats the best video editing software for my needs? I'm new to editing vids, so I need something thats easy to use, and is free (or at least something that I can just keep using a "free trial" on).
I need to be able to add music, text, and take clips from different videos.

About 10 minutes after I poted this thread, I found out my computer had Windows Movie Maker. w00t!

Windows Movie Maker 2 is a good program, for its price. It shining points are titling and integration with XP. But other than that, it is outdone by pretty much every other program out there. I highly recommend it, though, in cases like Minion's.
