Hi

I have a friend who thinks he know everything. He says I don't know anytihng about computers, even though Ive been using them for 3 years. Well, he's trying to tell me that my Pentium MMX is slower than his Pentium 3. Hah. I keep telling him the MMX is for REAL computers with video acceleration and stuff for games. but he always says that Pentiums 3 are better and faster. I told him they made the Pentium MMX four years ago with Win98 and it was supposed to automatically update itself every year and increase it's speed upto like 3gigbytes  maximum (it was 1.2gygabytes when I got it). Of course my friend thinks that since he works for Best Buy he smarter than me. I bet he doesn't know jack and I could easily have his job. I mean I installed my speakers and keyboard. Heck, I even helped his dad put in a new Monitor last week. He got jealous and told me anyone can do that.

I know the MMX is better than before since it's updated automaticallym, because I play Quake and it runs so much smoother than before, compared to his computer. He actually had to buy something called GL quake to run Quake on his slow junk Pentium 3. OH and he also bought a new video card just so he could even run gl quake:lol:. What's that? I thought all computers had video cards, since I can run Quake so good on my computer.

So anyways, who's right? Back me up guys I know I'm right. Even my other friends who know a lot about computers agree with me.

Ok thanks for your reply.

MMX is just an extra set of logic and instructions that were added onto the Pentium 1, yes Pentium 1, long ago when they were still running at 200mhz or less. The technology exists in all Pentiums made in the last I-don't-know-how-many years, including the II's, III's, 4's and mobiles. It allows certain multimedia-related processes to work more quickly. What's the megahertz (MHz) rating on your computer versus his?

Yes all computers have video cards if they have a monitor. What he did was change his. OpenGL is a graphics software library much like DirectX. If a person is not too technically savvy, it's easy to get confused and made to think that one thing is a problem on a computer when the real issue is something entirely different. It's quite easy for a very fast computer to be outrun in, say, a game, than a slower one if software is setup improperly, drivers aren't up to date, antivirus software is running, system memory (RAM) is insufficient, etc., etc., etc. There are just too many variables.

If your system is truly a Pentium (1) MMX, though, his chip should be significantly faster than yours. Oh, and chips don't automatically make themselves faster. They can often be artificially configured to go slightly faster than they're "supposed' to (called "overclocking"), but you're not going to get a 200mhz chip to go 300mhz, much less 3ghz.

I told you, my computer's speed is something like 2gygabytes now. It does automatically update itself...... if it didn't then Quake would still be running slow like it used to. And I have been running computers for like more than 2 years so I think I know what I am talking about. And my friend said his computer is like 2Gigahurtz or something, but it can't even run Quake. Hah. That's why he had to get a new video card. Hello!?? Man, some people. And don't think I'm not "technically savvy", as I have been playing games and installing patches for Quake for 2 years.

Psst.. it was supposed to be a joke bait thingy... you kinda killed it by answering.......

If you really want to go fast, you should get a pentium pro. They're like 2x as fast as any regular pentium. I've seen people with custom boot disks run circles around these new fancy machines.

BTW is this thread going to be moved to the pit now?

I'm an AMD man, myself. You pay more for Intel processors because you're paying for that name. Not to mention, Intel seems to exaggerate the clock speed on Pentium chips. I've seen a slightly lower speed AMD Athlon processor run just as fast as a "better" Pentium chip when they were both ran on a benchmark test.

I have a 7-MHz Leading Edge computer similar to JANG's.

7MHz Intel 8088 Processor
640KB RAM
20MB hard drive (that's 20 megabytes!)
Paradise EGA graphics card (man that thing really rocks)
360KB floppy drive

EGA 16-color monitor that can also fake amber and green text modes like JANG's

BTW, I'm another anti-Intel guy! GO AMD!!

Anyway, your friend is right about MMX.

wow. Only true computer nerds could appreciate this. Maybe the best thread I've run across in a while!!! My 'puter is ALMOST as cool as the one jang described with the 8088... it's called an iMac hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha
