Ok, I need help!! I know the first issue is that I'm dealing with an Emachine in the first place. Not to mention that it's only an Etower 266. I didn't have a choice in the matter there. The main issue is that while I came up with this brilliant idea to clean out a bunch of junk from the memory of this lovely contraption, I have apparently also removed it's modem driver. It would be fabulous if I had a restore disk....or anything that include any info from this here machine, but it was purchased used - as is.

Does anyone have a clue as to what type of modem was installed in a Emachine Etower 266??? I'm getting a Hardware Failure error but I know the modem isn't fried, I just can't get anything to play well with it.

Any suggestions? Other than trash it or get a new modem?

First off what version of windows are you running and have you tried “add hardware” from the control panel, some times the window drivers will work to get you going again. The second thing you can do is open the case and pull out the card and it should have the manufacture on it and most likely I have the install disk for it or something close and can send the files to you. :)

Get the FCC number off the modem, and go here (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm) to find out who made the card. But if you still can't find it, I have a couple phone modems around here somewhere.

EDIT: I looked and found a site that said the modem is "56K* ITU V.90 PCI Fax/Modem." I'm thinking its an ITU brand, which I've never heard of before..

I have Win98. Now, I have the modem and driver back. But, now when I try to connect, I get the dialing message window....but that's it. It just sits there. No error message...nothing....just 'dialing.... 123-4567'

Don't you think I should at least be getting an error message that tells me that there's no dial tone or something? I've done a diagnostic check on the modem and all is well there. Now I'm wondering if it's a TAPI or HyperTrm issue.

??????What happens when you run a restore disk that wasn't originally made for that PC?????

If your talking about the little 3 1/2 inch floppy disk, it should work, as long as its for Windows 98. BTW, you have Win98, or Win98 SE? I'm not sure of a way to tell, mabey the system properties? I don't know if the version matters, but it could. I'll let somebody else answer that for you. Hold down the windows key (between CTRL and ALT, looks like the windows logo) and hit the pause button while holding the Win key.

But first, have you tried re-installing your ISP software? That could be a problem. If the software sees a different modem, it might not use it to dial. I know its the same modem, but once it has been un-installed, it wiped clean, so it may think its a differnet modem. Do you hear the modem dialing, or is that just what the message you get says?

EDIT!! Back up (as in write on paper) all your internet settings before you uninstall anything. Those things are heck to figure out if you don't know it. Unless your software configures it automatically, which is a good thing. BTW, what is your ISP?

It's Win98. Not SE.

No, I haven't tried re-installing my ISP software, but I did do a 'mock-up' to set up an account straight through my IE. I don't even hear the modem dialing, it just gives me the dialing message window.

If it's an Emachine, and I have a Compaq Restore disk (CD), do you think that would screw it up - if it's all the same Win98??? (As a last resort, before throwing it off the roof??)

As long as its for Windows 98, it should work. But the worst that could happen is it would reject it. It shoulden't mess anything up.

As quoted by Mr. Burns....

"Excellent!!!"

Thanks for letting me pick your brain. I'll go try and mess around with it for a bit. If it doesn't work....I'll be back. (Wow, I'm a plethera of quotes today. ;) )

Thanks!!

DONT USE A COMPAQ SYSTEM RESTORE DISK ON AN EMACHINES PC!!!

First off, compaq restore disks don't have any information on them just pointers to a sys_volume drive all compaq computers have (normally drive d:) so it won't do a thing. Second You could really mess up you PC by FORCE-INSTALLING drivers not meant for it.

If you need a driver, just head down to http:\\www.driversguide.com U/P: drivers/all
there you will find almost any driver you are looking for.

Sounds to me like your Comm. port isn't configured correctly, If your mouse is connected to comm. 1 then the modem should be on comm. 2 or 4 if your mouse is a PS2 then your modem is normally set to comm. 1

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I just have to go and get a new modem and start from scratch - but the PC isn't worth the $20 for the new modem. I'm going to turn it into an anchor.

I was planning on getting a new CPU early next year, so I'm just going to give mine up to replace this one. I have access to another one that I can borrow until I have the $$$ to buy my new one.

I'm just tired of trying to fix a 2GB/32M ---it's just not worth it.

Thanks for all the advice.
